Efforts by Claud Balls, the French Director of Intelligence, to deny the story, were unsuccessful. Although a special platoon from the U.S. Navy Seals immediately came ashore and surrounded the residence, Saddam had again escaped to parts unknown. SNS, however, was able to secure indisputable proof from a member of Chirac's house staff who said he photographed Chirac and Saddam trying to console each other about the end of their positions in world affairs.
