Strange Famous Firsts of the 1920’s.
The 1920’s in America were known as the "Jazz Age" or the "Roaring Twenties," in Europe they were commonly called the Golden Twenties. The 20’s were fun and games, mobsters, and the decade of the flappers until The Stock Market collapsed during October 1929.
There were many first that occurred during the Roaring Twenties, which include:
1920
Lucy Slowe became the first black woman tennis champion in the United States. During a tournament in Baltimore, she won the woman's singles title.
Ethelda "Thel" Bleibtrey became the first United States woman to win a gold medal in the Olympics.
1921
Bessie Coleman became the first United States black female pilot.
Margaret Gorman became the first Miss America. Margaret was 16 years of age with measurements of 30-25-32.
1923
Henry Sullivan became the first American to swim across the English Channel.
1924
Clifton Reginald Wharton, Sr. became the first black to pass United States Foreign Service exam.
1925
Nellie Taylor Ross became the first female state governor for the state of Wyoming.
1926
Gertrude Ederle became the first American woman to swim the English Channel. It took her 14 hours and 39 minutes, which beat the men’s record.
1927
Al Jolson had the lead role in the first talking motion picture, "The Jazz Singer."
Charles Lindbergh became the first man to fly solo across the Atlantic.
Norma Talmadge became the first footprints at Grauman's Chinese.
1928
Janet Gaynor became the first Oscar winner for Best Actress.
Emil Jannings became the first Oscar winner for Best Actor.
